For my capstone design project at the University of Victoria during the summer of 2019, my team designed a drag-based altitude control system for a high-power sounding rocket. Our client for the project was the UVic Rocketry Team (UVR), and we were tasked with developing a system that could integrate into a rocket designed around a commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) solid rocket motor with a predicted apogee of 10,000 ft above ground level. My main contributions to the project were developing the control system, performing loading case calculations, structural failure analysis using FEA, and leading the project management and documentation.
Our project won the Mechanical Engineering Department’s “2019 Most Innovative Capstone Project Award”, and was featured in the local news.
